Monarchs in the Rough
We would like to announce that Naples Lakes CC has joined Monarchs in the Rough, a partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund and Audubon International to help fight the population decline of the monarch butterflies. We have partnered with Monarch in the Rought to fight habitat loss of monarch butterflies by planting milkweed in out-of-play areas on our golf course.
The monarch butterfly population has declined by 90% in the last 20 years, putting this species incredibly close to extinction. A key factor is loss of milkweed habitat, which is vital for the caterpillar’s diet and life cycle. Milkweed is where monarchs lay their eggs and is also the food caterpillars must eat to survive. We are proud to be a part of this effort to support monarch butterfly populations by growing habitat.
We seeded two areas in February with swamp milkweed seed and a mix of wildflowers donated by a member. One area is to the left of the back tee on #3 and the other area is to the right of #17 tee. You’ll see a sign in both areas denoting the sites. We will manage these areas for maximum flowers and foliage to support the monarch and other native pollinators.
Please contact, Monica Higgins for more details or if you want to support our efforts!
